I have emphysema. How much baking soda would I add to what amount of water to reap the benefits of its alkalizing properties?

The best way to judge how much bicarbonate to take is to go by pH testing. You can purchase pH test strips all over the internet. Get some and start checking saliva and urinary pH.  If on the acid side take 1/4 to 1/2 tsp of sodium bicarbonate once or twice a day until the pH gets up to 7.3 or 7.4. There is a safe limit to how much sodium bicarbonate can be consumed and its on the package of sodium bicarb, usually no more than 7 doseshalf teaspoons/day.if under age 60 but only 3 half teaspoons per day if age 60 or older. The danger is too much alkalinization which can cause other problems.

The baking soda can be added to an 8 oz glass of water (1/4 to 1/2 tsp) . Check pH daily to monitor need. Make the necessary life-style and dietary changes to remain more alkaline without need for sodium bicarbonate .
